Yielding to group pressure
3 types of conformity
Identification, compliance and internalisation
Compliance
Publicly, not privately, going along with majority influence to fit in / avoid rejection
Weak and temporary, only shown in the presence of a group
Result of NSI
Internalisation
Public and private acceptance of the majority group’s belief system
Stronger permanent form of conformity as it is maintained outside of the group’s presence
Result of ISI
Identification
Short term change of behaviour and beliefs only in the presence of a group as membership is valued
What is ISI? (2)
Informational Social Influence
Driven by desire to be correct
Permanent as we change our public and private opinion assuming others have more knowledge
What is NSI? (3)
Normative Social Influence
Driven by desire to be liked in order to avoid rejection
Individuals want to appear normal and be one of the majority
Temporary change in behaviour
