Conformity Flashcards
What is Conformity?
A change in belief or behaviour to fit in in response to real of imaginary group pressure
2 ISI experiments
Jennes 1932
Sherif 1935
Jennes 1932 procedure
1)Ambiguous
2)Estimate a number of beans in a glass bottle(privately)
3)Provide estimate and discuss as a group
4)Estimate individually
Jennes 1932 findings
1)Most changed their estimate after a group discussion, leaning towards a group average
2)Males changed their answer by 256 beans
3)Females changed by 382
Jenness 1932 conclusion
1) Judgement is affected by majority opinions, especially in ambiguous situations
2)Discussion is not effective in changing an opinion if the opinions are the same
Sherif 1935 aim
To show that people conform in ambiguous situations
Sherif 1935 procedure
1) Participants in a dark rom asked to estimate how far a (stationary) point of light was moving
2)Tested individually
3)Tested in groups of 3 (2 similar opinions and 1 dissimilar)
4)Each person had to say their answer aloud
