Conformity Flashcards
define conformity
changes in behaviour due to influence from other people
what are the three types of conformity
compliance
internalisation
identification
outline compliance
going along with a group and taking on their behaviour temporarily to fit in
- personal beliefs do not change and behaviour change is temporary
outline identification
temporarily changing behaviour whilst taking on a social role or wanting to become like a group of people and taking on their behaviours
- behaviour change is usually temporary and personal beliefs don’t always change
outline internalisation
changing behaviour and beliefs permanently after learning new information
what are the explanations for conformity
normative
informational
outline normative social influence
temporary behaviour change to avoid rejection / to fit in with a group > compliance
outline informational social influence
learning new knowledge and applying to own beliefs > internalisation
outline Aschs research that supports NSI
75% conformed at least once despite an answer being unambiguous
> people conformed to fit in rather than to be right (that would’ve been ISI)
outline Aschs research support for ISI
- higher task difficulty = more conformity
> supports the idea that people conform to the majority bc they believe the majority is right
outline limitations for NSI and ISI
- dispositional factors such as individual differences
> nAffiliators are more likely to conform bc they desire to fit in and be liked
> people with an internal locus of control are less likely to conform - hard to distinguish between NSI and ISI in real life
