changing of behaviour due to group pressure
Compliance
when an individual changes their behaviour publicly but not privately, temporary change
Identification
public and private beleifs change, temporary
Internalisation
permamnent change of public and private beleifs
Normative social influence
changing of behaviour to be accepted and belong to a group, avoid social rejection
Informational social influence
conforming to gain knowledge, beleive someone else is ‘right’
Individual differences
explaination for conformity, not everyone will be affected in the same way
Jenness (1932) aim
see whether opinions will change in response to a group discussion
Jenness (1932) method
- ambiguous situation
- glass bottle filled with 811 beans
- 26 students individually guessed amount of beans in jar
- then divided into groups of 3 for anwers
- then given opportunity for individual answer again
Jenness result
nearly all changes origional answer
- male students changed by around 256 beans
- females by 382 beans
Asch (1951) conformity research
- 123 american male college students
- judge line length after confederates give wrong answers
- 12 trials - 36% conformity
- people conform even when they know its wrong - compliance + informational
