Q

Differences between the north and south

A

The north was largely industrial whereas the south was rural
The north had almost no slaves whereas the south relied very heavily on slavery , almost all the south’s wealth was based on slavery and almost all of the country’s 4 million slaves were in the south
Many states in the south had banned slavery completely however the south believed that slavery should be spread north for the economy
Contradictory to that point, the north was an emerging middle class without slaves

Q

Describe the Missouri compromise

A

In 1819 Missouri requested to enter the union but there was strong opposition
In 1820 they were allowed but any state north of them were required to be a free state
It worked until 1854 when Kansas and Nebraska wanted to join and upon joining were allowed to choose whether or not they were a free state- this destroyed the compromise as Nebraska was north of Missouri

Q

The norths actions in the war

A

They used their higher industrialisation to their advantage eg railroads
18 months into the war, the south seemed to be winning
This lead Lincoln to free the slaves believing it would destroy the confederacy (among other reasons)
On New Years 1863 he released the emancipation proclamation, hoping it would lead the slaves in the south to fight for the union, he was right, many did

Around. 10,000 freed slaves were trying to find favourable places to live (the south was definitely not) so it was between Kansas and Liberia

A

Put local supplies under strain
Wasn’t received well by some white people in Kansas
Around 26,000 black citizens moved there in the 1870s
