What was the 13th amendment
A law passed by abe Lincoln stating slaves were now illegal, making the emancipation proclamation law
The effects of the 13th amendment
Black slaves were now free but still faced lots of racism and poverty due to years of enslavement
They were arrested for tiny crimes and kept enslaved that way
What were black codes and how were they dealt with
Before the civil war black codes were created to keep slaves tied to their owners
It was combatted with the civil rights act 1866, making black codes illegal
How was the civil rights act enforced
The southerners had to abide by it (eg not keep slaves) to be allowed representatives in congress
This also applied to the 13th amendment
What was the time period of reconstruction in the south??
1866-1877
What was legislation
A law passed to make it illegal to discriminate against African Americans
Name some problems with legislation
Only made African Americans equal in theory, racism was still very common, esp in the south
Despite the law many white still believed they were superior to black people
This resulted in segregation too
Despite this law there were still other laws eg Jim Crow laws that worked against black people
Describe the effects of the jim Crow laws
Laws in places such as Alabama
Enforced segregation in public places eg buses, schools, theatres, libraries and restaurants
Black and white Americans couldn’t marry each other
Housing was also separated by race
What were carpetbaggers??
People who moved from north to south after the war
Many thought they were trying to profit off of the south’s struggles
Often republicans
Helped form new governments in the south
