Confidence And Self-efficacy Flashcards
What is sports confidence and an example
The belief that an individual has to be successful in sport e.g. outcome or performance goal
Vealey’s model: what is trait confidence
An innate level of self belief
-stable/enduring
Vealey’s model: what is state confidence
A situation specific level of belief
-unstable
What is Bandura’s definition of self-efficacy
The level of self-confidence that an individual has in a specific situation
What are the impacts of confidence
- increased performance
- increased motivation
- develops approach behaviour
- increases participation
-increases self-esteem
Vealey’s model: what is sporting context
The situation that a performer is in
Vealey’s model: what is competitive orientation
Performers willingness to take a risk
Vealey’s model: what is behavioural response
Performers’ behaviour, directly affected by level of confidence e.g. high confidence = high chance of success
Vealey’s model: what is subjective perception of outcome
Performers emotional response
- can be positive or negative
Bandura’s 4 factors that effect self-efficacy
-performance accomplishments
-vicarious experiences
-verbal persuasion
-emotional arousal
What are performance accomplishments
-when the performer is reminded of previous successes
-this increases confidence and therefore increases performance
What are vicarious experiences
-when the performer observes another performer of a similar ability performing the skill successfully
What is visual persuasion
-when the performer receives positive reinforcement/external verbal feedback
-increased confidence = increased improved performance
What is emotional arousal
-the performer understands the impact of arousal on performance/can control arousal
-increased confidence = increased performance
