Difficulty (simple)
Little information to process / few decisions to make.
e.g. catching a ball in rugby
Difficulty (complex)
Lots of information to process / lots of decisions to make. e.g. serving in tennis
Environmental Influence (open)
Environment is changing. e.g. marking a defender
Environmental Influence (closed)
Environment is stable. e.g. free shot in basketball
Muscular Involvement (gross)
Skills involving large muscle groups. e.g. long jump / tackle in rugby
Muscular Involvement (fine)
Skills involving small muscle groups. e.g. throwing a dart
Pacing (self-paced)
Performer controls the rate at which the skill is performed. e.g. penalty in football
Pacing (externally paced)
The environment determines the rate at which the skill is performed at. e.g. saving a penalty
Organisation (high)
Sub-routines are closely linked / difficult to separate.
e.g. golf swing / somersault
Organisation (low)
Sub-routines are easily separated. e.g. triple jump
Continuity (discrete)
Skills that have a clear beginning and end. e.g. free throw in basketball
Continuity (serial)
Skills with 2 or more actions linked together. e.g. triple jump, where the hop, step and jump are linked together.
Continuity (continuous)
Skills that have no obvious beginning and end. e.g. front crawl in swimming
