Conduction and convection Flashcards
1
Q
How does conduction work?
A
- Heats up solid
- As the temperature of a particle increases, its kinetic energy store increases and it starts vibrating more
- The particle collides with neighbouring particles more, which also increases their kinetic energy store
- Energy is passed down the objext through the particles, effectively increasing the temperature of the whole object
2
Q
How does convection work?
A
- Heats up liquids and gases
- As the particles near the heat source increase in temperature, they become less dense and rise above
- The cooler, more dense particles fall down to the heat source where they also get heated up
- Previously heated up particles now cool down and fall back, creating an endless loop
3
Q
How does radiation work (infrared to heat up)?
A
- Heats up through a vacuum
- All particles are constantly absorbing and emitting radiation
- The more radiation the object emits, the higher its temperature
