A criminal investigation is defined as….
“An investigation conducted by Police officers with a view to it being ascertained whether a person should be charged with an offence, or whether a person charged with an offence is guilty of it.”
What are the 2 methods of investigation?
- Reactive
(Someone reports the crime, need to uncover material that will provide evidence to prove guilt). - Proactive
(Usually starts with info./intel. that is developed to ascertain if an individual or group is involved in criminal activity).
What should your priorities be when attending an incident?

i. Preserve Life.
ii. Identify victims & witnesses.
iii. Preserve the scene.
iv. Secure evidence.
v. Identify suspects.
What are the ‘Golden Hour Principles’ ?

- Best evidence is obtained.
- Accounts taken when memory is fresh.
- Physical evidence is secured (not disposed).
- Suspects located early - to recover property &/or forensic evidence.
- Case is progressed swiftly (saving time, money, ensuring victim/witness safety & increased public confidence.
What is the A-B-C approach to investigation?
Assume Nothing.
Believe Nothing.
Challenge Everything.
When considering the “CHAIN OF EVIDENCE” what will ‘we’ need to be able to show?
WHERE it was found. WHERE it was seized. The TIME of the seizure. The DATE of the seizure. WHO it was seized by, & what was done with it after it was seized.
