A thick band of fascia on the lateral aspect of the thigh running from the ASIS to the lateral condyle of the tibia. Because it crosses the knee joint tightness in the muscles attatching to it can cause it to pull resulting in mal-tracking of the patella or a rubbing of the IT band against the head of the fibula.
