Conditions - Peripheral Vascular Disease Flashcards
What is peripheral vascular disease?
The narrowing of the peripheral arteries (arteries distal to the aortic arch)
What is the clinical presentation of peripheral vascular disease?
Can be asymptomatic
Symptoms: cold extremities, ,intermittent claudication (on exercise), rest pain (critical limb ischaemia), skin ulceration, gangrene
Signs: cold white legs, absent femoral popliteal or foot pulses
What is the pathophysiology of peripheral vascular disease?
Atherosclerosis causing stenosis of arteries
What is the aetiology of peripheral vascular disease?
Atherosclerotic damage
What are the risk factors of peripheral vascular disease?
Hyperlipidaemia T2DM Hypercholesterolemia Age Sex Diet Weight Smoking Family history
What is the epidemiology of peripheral vascular disease?
4-12% between 55-70
15-20% of people over 70
What are the diagnostic tests for peripheral vascular disease?
ECG - 80% of patient with intermittent claudication have evidence of coronary artery disease
Doppler Ultrasonography
What does a doppler ultrasonography show in peripheral vascular disease?
Confirms diagnosis, size, degree, length
What is the treatment of peripheral vascular disease?
Modify risk factors
What are the complications of peripheral vascular disease?
Acute limb ischaemia Gangrene Amputation Infection Poor healing Ulceration
