Concepts for test #2 Flashcards
מפלתן של שונאי ישראל
The downfall of Israel’s enemies (really a euphemism for the downfall of BI)
קריאת שמע על המטה
The shema said before you go to sleep at night (this is in addition to the two Torah obligated Shemas)
המפיל
The bracha said as part of קריאת שמע על המטה. This Bracha is thanking Hashem for enabling us to go to sleep, waking us up, we pray for safety overnight, and ask Hashem that we’ll do more mitzvot
What is Gematria for Ashrei
קמה-145
אשרי תמימי דרך
119 קיט, adherí with 8 times Aleph bet
Rabeinu Yona difference between Halel and Ashrei
In Talmud Bavli in masechet Shabbat, Rabbi Yosi says I want to finish halel everyday and Talmud says, it’s blasphemy!! we ask why, answer is bc he’s rly talking abt Psukei D’zimra.
Rabeinu Yona: asks question; why is it so bad to say Hallel every day? Hallel is said on those special days bc it’s a rememberance that Hashem did something great for us a while ago (in the past). If we say Hallel every day it’s like saying Hashem only did good things in the past but obv Hashem does stuff every day. However, Ashrei has stuff for every day and future, this is living our life with Hashem involved on a daily basis. (there’s nothing past tense in Ashrei
Significance of Aleph Bet
Rabbi Dr. Monk: praise G-d will every sound out of our mouth
Why no “נ”
Rabbi Dr. Abraham J. Twerski) There’s a concept of descent needed for ascent, for example some spiritual heights may not be attainable without the fall. While one doesn’t want to fall, knowing that there’s a safety net is needed.
-The concept of falling and not getting up is so so horrible (and cannot be how we live life) that we just skip nun in the first place.
Halacha for Ashrei from Shulchan Aruch
When saying the Pasuk of פותח את ידך one must have strong Kavana and if not, one must go back.
Halacha on Ashrei for Mishna Brura
Must have Kavana on פותח את ידך bc one of the reasons we actually say it is for that Pasuk (that G-d cares abt us [his creations]) (bc גמרא tells us that)
קריאת שמע על המטה
Shema said before u go to sleep at night in addition to the two בשכבת ובקומך
המפיל
Bracha said as part of kriyat Shema al hamita, this bracha is thanking Hashem for sleep and waking up and asking for safety and religious guidance and mitzot etc
3 reasons to say Shema before bed
To go to sleep within words of Torah
Demons come at night so Shema is for protection
At night we don’t have control over our thoughts so Shema is for protection of bad thoughts
Mishna Brura on shema #1 (services)
if a person does Ma’arive while it’s still day then during קריאת שמע על המטה one should say all three paragraphs (it’s always good to say 3 paragraphs bc it comes out to 248 words [as protection for 248 limbs] for whole body).
Shulchan Aruch on Shema
Say shema right before you go to sleep, no eat, drink, talk after bc it says “Imru bilvavchem (which he interprets as Ve’ahavta) and be silent” so
