Concepts and Clarifying Relationships Flashcards
What is instantiation?
A method to make abstract concepts more concrete. Refine theoretical ideas through a focal problem statement.
What is a conceptual definition?
Stating what what means; clear and concise definition of a concept.
How you define it in our RQ.
What is shared meaning versus surplus?
Shared meaning is points of agreement between theories.
Essential core of theories.
Surplus is everything else.
What is a nomological network?
Meaning and utility of concept emerges in context of broader theoretical network in which concept is embedded.
A representation of the constructs in a theory, their observable manifestations, and the interrelationships among and between these.
What is emic versus etic?
Emic is to understand a culture alone (concepts they do); etic is to do cross-cultural research.
Emic is an insider’s perspective which etic is an observer’s perspective.
What is an operational definition?
How a concept is measured.
What is nominal data?
No order or value, used to label variables.
Mode good.
What is ordinal data?
Numerical scale with order. Differences between intervals unknown.
Mode and median good.
What is interval data?
Numerical scale with order. Differences between intervals known. Mean, median, mode good for this.
What is ratio data?
Produces order.
Differences known.
True 0.
What is a hypothesis?
An idea proposed that can be tested to see if it is true.
What is a theory?
Explanation of observations constructed via scientific method.
