What is a system?
A collection of parts which work together for a specific reason
What is a computer system?
A collection of hardware / software working together for a specific purpose
What do systems do?
Receive input from the outside, process it inside and produce an output
What is an interface?
Boundaries which separate the system from the outside
Why are computer systems important?
- Improve manufacturing quality
- cheaper manufacturing
- faster information access
- improved communication
General purpose system
Designed to perform multiple tasks such as a laptop or phone
Dedicated system
Designed to perform one / few functions such as a ticket vending machine
Control systems
Designed to control robot machinery
Embedded system
Embedded in and usually controls part of a larger system such as traffic lights or sat navs
Expert systems
Designed to behave like humans and is commonly used for diagnosing diseases etc
Management information systems
They bring info of a company together and produce reports based on this data
