Why are standards important?
- enables equipment from diff manufacturers to work together
- easier too learn new systems as they are similar
- help ensure fair play / access to markets
What are the categories of standards?
- de facto
- de Jure
- proprietary
- industry
- open
De facto
Ensure files / systems can be used by anyone such as word and the QWERTY
De Jure
Standards by law, de facto standards which are so common communication would be impossible without such as ASCII
Proprietary
Standards made by an organisation to comply with their products such as Apple computers using IOS
Industry
Standards excepted by non commercial such as ISO (international standards organisation)
Open
Available to anyone and are not dominated by one interest / group and aren’t for profit
What can legal / ethical issues effect?
- privacy
- data security
- copyright
What is the data protection act?
- organisations must allow people to see data held about them
- not use data in anyway which could cause damage / distress
- organisations can only collect data for specified / lawful purpose
Can computer be good for the environment?
No because it takes up ally of energy and obsolete computer contain toxic materials
However is reduces he need for transpiration etc
How can energy be reduced in computers?
Virtual servers reduce the number of physical servers in a data centre
What do standards exist for?
Programming languages, operating systems, data formats, communication protocols and electrical interfaces
