Comprehensive Flashcards
What parts of the head are under somatic motor control?
Extraocular muscles
Intrinsic and Extrinsic muscles of the tongue
Where do the sensory cell bodies of VII lie?
Geniculate ganglion
Where does the Falx Cerebri attach anteriorly?
Crista galli of the ethmoid bone
What are bridging veins?
Allow drainage of the superior cerebral veins to the superior sagittal sinus
How can infection spread from the face to the cavernous sinus?
Anastomoses of the ophthalmic and facial veins
Where does the superior petrosal sinus drain? Inferior petrosal?
Superior petrosal sinus drains to the transverse sinus
Inferior petrosal sinus drains to the internal jugular
Where is CSF produced and where is it drained?
Produced in the Choroid plexus
Drained into venous sinuses at inpockets of subarachnoid space called arachnoid villi
What is communicating hydrocephalus?
Caused by reduced reabsorption of CSF
Can damage brain via increased pressure
Describe an Epidural Hematoma
Bleeding between dura mater and bone, usually caused by fracture near the pterion
Rapid bleeding
Lens shaped mass
Patient lucid at first, but can die within hours
What is an uncal herniation? Tonsillar Herniation?
Uncal herniation - Displacement of the temporal lobe (uncus) through tentorial notch
Tonsillar herniation - Displacement of cerebellum through foramen magnum
Both can be caused by epidural and subdural hematomas
Describe a subdural hematoma.
Bleeding between dura and arachnoid
Results from tearing of branches of superior cerebral veins or venous sinus
Slow bleeding, can remain undetected and cause herniation if untreated
Describe Subarachnoid hematomas
Bleeding into subarachnoid space
Results from rupture of an aneurysm or physical tearing of cerebral artery or vein
Bleeding can be rapid (if arterial) and fatal
E.g. berry aneurysm
Describe the drainage of tears.
Tears drain through lacrimal puncta to lacrimal sac to nasolacrimalduct to inferior meatus of nasal cavity
