Compounds, Elements, Atoms. Flashcards
What is a compound
a compound is made up of a bond of different atoms
What is an element
An element is a substance that cannot be broken down into any other substance. Every element is made up of its own type of atom
What is an atom
Simplest particle of an element
how can electric cars reduce pollution
they dont produce carbon dioxide or pther harmful emmissions
What is global warming
a gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth’s atmosphere generally attributed to the greenhouse effect caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide
Why is global warming happening
because when heat and energyu is produced from the sun, some heat is retained to keep the earth warm and some heat and enegry is reflected back to space because of the layer of greenhouse gases reflecting it back to earth
what can we do to stop global warming
electric cars, reuse, eat organic foods, recyle, avoid using plastic
what is chernobyl
– nuclear accident from industrial processes contaminated a huge area of land.
what do fossil feuls release when they burn
they may release small amounts of acidic gases called SULPHUR DIOXIDE and OXIDES OF NITROGEN
what are Sulphur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen causes of
acid rain
whats complete combustion
Fuel + Oxygen = Carbon Dioxide + Water
whats incomplete combustion
Fuel + Oxygen = Carbon Monoxide + Water
What is radiation
a wave which carries heat
what is convection
when hot gases or liquids expand or rise
what is conduction
when particles heat up as the vibrate more and pass on these vibrations
what does magnesium and oxygen uqual
magnesium oxide
what does iron and oxygen equal
iron oxide
what does copper and oxygen equal
copper oxide
where does thermal energy move from
hot areas to cold areas
sulphur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen are causes of what
acid rain
when carbon burns what can it form
carbon dioxide
what will carbon dioxide turn lime water
cloudy
what can water be tested by
blue cobalt chloride solution
what do most feuls contain
hydrogen and carbon
