Compounds Flashcards
Ionic Compounds
Chemical compounds composed of anions (negative) and cations (positive) that are held together by ionic bonding. Metal reacts with non-metal and the non-metal will take electrons from the metal to fill the outer shell.
Naming Ionic Compounds
Parent ion (atom losing electrons) is named first then the negative ion (atom gaining electrons). Name the parent normally then change the negative ion to end in -ide. (chloride, sulphide, oxide)
Covalent Compounds
2 mon-metals bond by sharing electrons to complete their outer shell. Also called a molecular bond.
Naming Covalent Compounds
Prefixes are used to indicate the number of each atom in the compound. (mono, di, tri, tetra, penta, hexa, hept, oct, non, dec). They are ordered in the same order as they appear in the periodic table. A compound with suffix -ate is usually the most common, while suffix -ite means fewer oxygen atoms (e.g. Nitrate vs Nitrite). Prefix per- means one more oxygen atom, while prefix hypo- means one less oxygen atom (e.g. perchlorate and hypochlorite).
