compounding methods for semisolid preparations Flashcards
incorporation
mixnig one semisolid formualtion into antoher
- > geometric dilution
- > levigating (slab with spatula)
- > trituartion
fusion
components melting together, then cooled with constant stirring until congealsed
*for emulsions prep: heat oil phase and water phase seperately, then add water phase to oil phase and mix till congealed
combining fusiona nd incorportation
used for emulsion type f creams or suspension type of ointments
- fusion first
- incorporation 2nd
Indicate the method of preparation for the following formulations:
Rx (For 100g)
Curcumin 0.5g
White petrolatum 99.5g
Method: Levigate the curcumin with a small proportion of the white petrolatum. Using geometric dilution incorporate the white petrolatum and thoroughly mix.
Indicate the method of preparation for the following formulations:
Cocaine hydrochloride 1.5 g
Phenol crystals 3g
Tannic acid 10g
Hydrous lanolin 40 g
White petrolatum qs 100g
- Pulverize the phenol crystals into a fine powder.
- Add about 35 g of white petrolatum and mix well.
- Add the lanolin to the phenol:white petrolatum mixture.
- Mix the tannic acid with 4 mL of purified water (solubility 2.9g/mL).
- Incorporate the tannic acid solution into the ointment.
- Dissolve the cocaine hydrochloride in 1 mL of water as possible (solubility 2.5g/mL).
- Incorporate the cocaine hydrochloride solution into the ointment.
- Add sufficient white petrolatum to make 100 g and mix well.
Indicate the method of preparation for the following formulations:
Carbopol 934 0.24%
Propylene glycol 16.7 %
Methylparaben 0.015%
Sodium hydroxide, qs
Purified water, qs ad 100%
Method:
- Dissolve methylparaben and disperse Carbopol 934 in about 80g of purified water (if making 100g)
- Add propylene glycol
- Neutralize with sodium hydroxide until pH about 7
- make up to 100 g
Indicate the method of preparation for the following formulations:
Cetyl esters wax 125g
White wax 120g
Mineral oil 560g
Sodium borate 5g
Water 190ml
Method:
- Melt together cetyl esters wax, white wax and mineral oil at about 70C
- Dissolve sodium borate in water at 70C
- Mix aqueous phase into oil phase while mixing and keep mixing until congealed
Indicate the method of preparation for the following formulations:
Rx (For 100g)
Peruvian balsam: 12g
Levigating agent: 12g
Sulfur ointment: 76G
Sulfur Ointment
Precipitated sulfur: 10g
Liquid petrolatum: 10g
White ointment: 80g (white wax 5g and 95g white petrolatum)
- Mix the Peruvian balsam with castor oil as the levigating agent 2. Incorporate the sulfur ointment by geometric dilution
- Mix until uniform
Sulfur ointment is prepared :
1. Levigate the precipitated sulfur with the liquid petrolatum to a smooth paste. 2. Incorporate the white ointment and mix until uniform
White Ointment is prepared:
1. Melt the white wax and white petrolatum together until liquefied at around 60-70C 3. Mix until congealed and cooled to room temperature
Indicate the method of preparation for the following formulations:
Zinc oxide 250g
Starch 250g
White petrolatum 500g
- Mix zinc oxide and starch
- Levigate with white petrolatum by geometric dilution to form a smooth paste
Indicate the method of preparation for the following formulations:
Rx
Sodium lauryl sulfate 10g
Propylene glycol 120g
Stearyl alcohol 250g
White petrolatum 250g
Purified Water 370g
Methyl paraben 0.25g
Propyl paraben 0.15g
- Prepare water phase:
- dissolve sodium lauryl sulfate and methyl paraben in water at 70C - add propylene glycol
- Prepare oil phase:
- melt together stearyl alcohol and white petrolatum at 70C
- add propyl paraben, mix until dissolved
- Add water phase to oil phase while mixing, continue mixing until congealed and cooled to room temperature
Indicate the method of preparation for the following formulations:
Cholesterol 30g
Cottonseed oil 30g
