Components of RPD Flashcards
List components of RPD
1-major connector→ connect components between 2 sides ,,provide rigidity to denture so
maintain any component in its place.
2-minor connector → connect other component (rest, clasp, …..) to major connector.
3-direct retainer → ex; clasps, attachment ,,provide retention,, resist vertical tissue
away movement to denture, passive at rest act only during displacement.
4-indirect retainer → placed in free end saddle to resist rotational tissue away movement
5-denture base /saddle → rest on edentulous area ,,carry artificial teeth,, support
6- rest → placed in rest seat ,,provide support from teeth,,
Define and classify denture base according to fitting surface
1-pure acrylic
2-pure metallic
Part of RPD rest on ridge and carry artificial teeth.
Advantages and disadvantage of pure acrylic RPD
Disadvantage:
1-bad conductor to heat 2-polymerization shrinkage 3- decrease strength compared to metal
Advantage:
1-allow relining when ridge resorption occur 2-accept addition, easy modification
3-give good esthetic as restore normal facial contour by flange
Advantages and disadvantage of pure metallic RPD
Advantage:
1-thin section 2-high strength,dimensional stable
3-thermal conductivity, increase circulation to ridge and nutrients through blood. So decrease
resorption ‘‘more healthy’’
Disadvantage:
1- can’t be relined 2-difficult adjustment and polishing
3-poor esthetic as not restore normal facial contour
types of saddle (minor connector )
1-lattice work ‘‘ladder shape’‘ ‘’open pattern’’
*Consist of:
1- 2 longitudinal struts just beside crest of ridge
2- several small struts between 2 longitudinal struts
2-mesh work
*Consist of metal band has many pores, provide micromechanical retention of acrylic resin.
3-lead wire ‘‘nail head’’
*Metal band where lead wire or nail head
Disadvantages of mesh work
1-it is difficult to pack acrylic resin in small pores so lattice work is better
2-interfere with placement of artificial teeth
Both lattice work and mesh work saddle used for…
combined base/acrylic denture
base as allow acrylic to be in fitting surface.
Attachment of artificial teeth to denture base
1-acrylic resin bond
2-metal post , where porcelain teeth has tube. So fixed to
post give mechanical retention by cement.
3-steel back (steel facing) → *consist of metal faced by acrylic or porcelain
used with anterior teeth in deep bite as it has high strength.
4-metal teeth → casted as part of metal base, used when
1-no need for esthetic ‘‘posteriorly’’ 2-limited interarch space
Function of denture base
1-carry artificial teeth.
2-improve esthetic anteriorly as restore normal facial contour.
3-stimulation and massaging of tissues.
5-prevent drifting of neighboring teeth and over eruption of opposing teeth.
6-support→ resist vertical tissue ward movement.
7-bracing→ resistance to horizontal forces ‘‘lateral and anteroposterior’’ through flange cover
slope of ridge.
8-retention especially in distal extension by maximum coverage to full depth of sulcus.
9-prevent anteroposterior movement.
