What is a proscenium stage
A stage where the audience sits on one side only is called a proscenium stage. The audience faces one side of the stage directly and normally sits at a lower height.
It’s main feature is it’s proscenium arch ‘picture frame like’
What is an end-on-stage
It is different to a proscenium stage in the way that the audience will all the the stage from the stage direction. It will often have tiered seating so the audience can have a clear view. It may have winged curtains.
What is an In-the-round stage
An in-the-round stage is positioned at the centre of the audience (aka there is an audience around the whole stage) this type of stage creates quite an intimate atmosphere and is good for drama that needs audience participation.
What is a traverse stage
It is structures in length like a catwalk that extends through the audience. The audience is divided into two and they sit either side of the stage.
What is a thrust stage
A thrust stage extends out to the audience. Seats are available on all three sides. Actors must ensure that all three sides of the stage are play toward in the performance for audience connection/view.
What is a promenade stage
The audience members generally stand and walk about rather than sit, watching the action happening amongst them and even following the performers around the performance space.
