Define compliance
The extent to which a patient complies with medical advice

The extent to which a person’s behaviour corresponds with agreed recommendations with a healthcare provider

What are the two category of reason for adherence?
Unintentional
Intentional
Describe unintentional adherence
Patients want to take medication but are prevented by barriers outside of their control
E.g. poor recall/ comprehension/ financial reasons.
Describe intentional adherence
Patient decides not to follow treatment regime, based on beliefs attitudes and experiences
Due to lay beliefs
What are some interventions to improve adherence?
Educating patient
Simplifying regime
Making it easier to remember to use medicine
Increased quality of interaction with, and trust in healthcare provider
