Complementary Scales (WISC-V) Flashcards
What are the complementary scales in WISC-V?
Naming speed, symbol translation, storage and retrieval
Naming Speed
- reflect the automaticity of naming as measured by a wide range of tasks.
- Retrieval verbal labels from long term memory
- Working memory
- Visual processing speed
- Oral motor sequencing
- Registration of visual stimuli
what are the two subtest of Naming speed?
Literacy, and quantity
What is Naming speed literacy? what are the three conditions ? is there a timer?
- Examinee required to name objects, letters, numbers as quickly as possible with a specific time limit.
- What are the three conditions of WISC-V: 1. Color – object name 2. Size color object 3. Letter Number Naming
- What is Naming Speed Literacy intended to measure:
(=Naming Speed Quantity)
* Storage
* Retrieval fluency
* Naming facility
- When is naming speed quantity used ? and what is it ? what does it measure?
– when it is to complement naming speed literacy in instances when math weaknesses are suspected
* Examinee to name the number of squares inside a large box
measures = naming speed literacy (=
* Storage
* Retrieval fluency
* Naming facility
What is STI? what does it measure? how many subtests?
- Measures:
- Visual-verbal associative memory across different types of conditions (encoding, recall, recognition)
- Auditory and visual processing
- Auditory discrimination
- Attention to visual and auditory processing
immediate, delayed, recognition
Immediate symbol translation
* what is it? When is it used, or recommended / intended to be assistive ?
Examinee here is shown a series of symbols and taught that each symbols responds / associates to a word, they are later asked to read the sentence made of the symbols
It is intended to assist in the identification of cognitive weaknesses that may be having an impact on academic learning
- What does immediate symbol translation measure?
- Storage, retrieval, fluency and accuracy
- Immediate recall
- Verbal-visual associative memory
= same as DT but delayed recall
When is delayed symbol translation administered?
- Is administered after 20-30 minutes from the immediate symbol translation test, it requires the examinee to translate sentences with symbols from memory
- What does delayed symbol translation measure?
Very similar to immediate except delayed recall
* Retrieval and storage accuracy and fluency
* Verbal-visual associative memory
What is Recognition symbol translation ? (examine …)
Examinee views the previous symbols and selects the word that corresponds to this from the list
Can we compare the results of RST with DST? If so, why?
- The results here can be compared to the delayed symbol translation to check for 1 symbol word associations 2 ability to retrieve them
weakness in delayed symbol with an intact performance in recognition can suggest weakness in retrieval
What can a delay in response with DST but an intact response of RST tell us?
can suggest weakness in retrieval
What does RST measure?
- Delayed recognition
- Verbal visual associative memory
- Retrieval / storage fluency, and accuracy
Whats is Storage and Retrieval index? *
It’s the sum of standard score of Naming Speed Index and Symbol Translation Index
What does the score of SRI reflect?
the ability to store and retrieve auditory and visual information from long-term memory
- What does a high SRI tell us?
- Well-developed capacity of learning
- Easy access to verbal stored knowledge
- What does a poor performance on SRI tell us?
- Deficits in encoding or retrieval of long-term memory stores
- Inattention
- Visual or verbal procession weakness
