Complaint from store owner stating firefighters while conducting fire prevention inspections, were trying on shoes and then asked the store owner for a discount. The store owner phoned you and stated he was very uncomfortable with the situation.

Do the actions of the firefighters violate Standards of Behavior?
Yes, if the actions of the firefighters were as the store owner reported, Standards of Behavior were violated:
Abide by and conform to the department’s rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
Exercise good judgment
Treat all persons in a respectful and courteous manner while on duty.
Not use their employment or standing in the Department… for personal gain…
What actions should you take?
Do not admit guilt, but assure store owner the matter will be investigated, and get re-contact information
Ensure all employees report misconduct
Notify BC of misconduct and consult regarding course of action
Mentor firefighters on roles and responsibilities
Have firefighters review Standards of Behavior and have them sign a copy acknowledging such
Consider seriousness of offense and past behavior
Exercise counseling, instruction, or verbal admonishment; if warranted.
Information gathering, broad based questioning
Call or allow employee to call a “Time Out” if questioning could lead to punitive action
If “Time Out” called then turn over to BC for further action
Document in business journal (No names/details)
