Arithmetic
PSF Engineers perform computations using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. They
read, gather and interpret data from gauges and instruments. Engineers locate, recall and use
proven mathematical formulas to accurately process data.
Mathematics and Hydraulics
PSF Engineers comprehend and apply fire service hydraulics theory. They perform computations
using current field hydraulics formulas, combined with data from gauges and instruments, to make
the correct adjustments at the pump panel to ensure safe and effective pressures are delivered to
the nozzle.
Acquiring and Interpreting Information
PSF Engineers adeptly access and interpret needed information to perform their duties and role.
They know their service areas and are familiar with driving routes and area features, landmarks and
layouts. Engineers know the department’s mission, vision and values. Engineers know and effectively
apply department policies, procedures, expectations, apparatus operating manuals, and applicable
laws. Engineers know and understand all apparatus systems, such as: computer systems, alarms,
gauges, lights, tools, technology and equipment. They accurately interpret, analyze and apply
information and data from multiple sources in a timely manner.
Applies and Maintains Apparatus, Tools, Technology and Equipment
PSF Engineers effectively set up, use and maintain the readiness of all apparatus and associated
tools, technology and equipment. Engineers are meticulous about timely and accurate rig checks.
They ensure all hand and power tools are in proper working order. They know each alarm, gauge,
digital readout, tool and piece of equipment well; know and recognize faults or risks in the engine’s
mechanical and response systems; troubleshoot effectively, know the remedies for malfunctions,
faults and failures and take immediate and proper action when discovered. They access needed
resources and restore apparatus, tools, technology and equipment to within normal operating
parameters. They appropriately and effectively communicate known or suspected issues through the
department chain of command. Engineers know and understand how the engines’ systems work and
integrate with other fixed fire systems and emergency response equipment or apparatus. They know
and understand potential faults and failures with those systems and know how to interpret and

PSF Engineers are informed and are active decision makers. Their decisions are based on the
department mission, vision, values, policies and procedures. Engineers have excellent situational
awareness. Engineers consider the intended and unintended consequences of their decisions. They
continually assess the best approach, set priorities and react well to changing circumstances.
Engineers take ownership of issues, understanding and adhering to department policies and
guidelines. They handle decisions at the lowest level, or elevate them up the chain of command
when appropriate. Engineers deploy equipment based on accurately assessed needs. They formulate
and implement effective plans even while under pressure. Engineers are calm, clear communicators
who inspire confidence and earn the trust of others through good decision making.

PSF Engineers are excellent communicators. They use active listening and effective speaking skills to
receive, send and clarify communication in ways that lead to understanding. Engineers comprehend
complex instructions and use paraphrasing and repetition to confirm understanding with supervisors
and team members. They accurately gather information to understand the concerns of team
members, citizens, and others. Engineers communicate honestly, openly and to the point. They

PSF Engineers keep their word, speak the truth and exemplify department values. They thoroughly

PSF Engineers understand and apply safe work practices. They are accountable for the safety of
others and support the safety policies of the department. Engineers know and follow all safety
policies and guidelines. They anticipate and mitigate risk by knowing their job, equipment and crew
well; by understanding mutual aid capability and capacities; by making sure that all equipment, tools
and gear are in good working order and ready to deploy (and deployed) safely; and by maintaining
excellent situational and scene awareness. Engineers are safe and efficient drivers who know
response routes well and the risks associated with each. Engineers understand the broad impact of
safety issues on a firefighter’s career. They glean valuable information from prior incidents. They
learn from mistakes and pass it on to others. They help to make the station a safe place and make
modifications or adjustments to the work environment as needed. Engineers carefully document and
follow through on any injury or safety violation.

PSF Engineers are life-long learners focused on personal and professional improvement. They
evaluate their own performance and behavior effectively and actively seek self-improvement
opportunities. They collaborate with supervisors to set and achieve measurable goals consistent with
