Competency 35: Structure & Function of Living Things Flashcards
Eukaryotic Cells
Make up human body
Prokaryotic cells
All bacteria
Autotrophs
Use energy from the sun to carry out photosynthesis & make own food
Heterotrophs
Must ingest food for their own purposes (animals)
Decomposers
Absorb dead and decaying matter
Level 1 body system
Cells: basic units of life
Level 2 body system
Tissues. Made up of cells that work together to perform specific activity.
Level 3 body system
Organs. Made up of tissues that work together to perform specific activity. Heart, brain, skin
Level 4 body system
Organ systems. Made up of 2 or more organs that work together to perform specific function. Circulatory system, nervous system, skeletal system (11 organ systems)
Level 5 body system
Organisms. Entire living thing that can carry out all basic life processes.
Skeletal System
Made up of bones & what keeps your body in shape & protects vital organs and allows u to move.
Muscular System
Responsible for movement and physical actions of internal organs like pounding of lungs and movement of food through digestive system. Generate heat to keep you warm.
Nervous System
Responsible for sending messages throughout your body. Divided into CNS (brain, spinal cord-receives info) & PNS (nerves, transmits messages to & from CNS)
Digestive System
Job of breaking down food into chemicals the body uses for fuel.
Respiratory System
Responsible for taking oxygen into body and releasing carbon dioxide out of body.
