Compassionate ABA Flashcards
How is ABA used
Conduct function behavior assessments, create behavioral intervention plans, operant condition, and functional communication training
Conduct Functional Behavior Assessments
Attention, Escape/Avoidance, Access to tangibles, Intrinsic/Sensory
Functional Communication Training
Ability to carry out and thrive typical daily conversation
___ Conditioning is used in ABA to shape behavior
Operant
How is operant condition used in ABA
Find a good reward, shape the behavior by getting the reward if does correct action
What are the pillars of natural environment Teaching
Let the child take the lead
Everyday environment
Less structured
More functional
Good for generalization
What are the pillars of Discrete Trail Training
ABC (Antecedent (instruction given), behavior (response), consequence (reinforcement delivery))
Highly controlled
Helpful to kickstart Learning
Criticism of ABA
Too tough on kids – too repetitive and not generalizable
Too focused on elimination of behaviors – discourages behaviors without acknowledging emotional content
Trying to eliminate differences
The proposed 8th pillar of ABA
Compassion
Empathy
Act of perceiving an experience from the other person’s perspective while understanding the other’s emotional response to that experience
Why is radical compassion important
Life is about suffering so human decency should not be earned
Tenets of Radical compassion
Noncontingent Compassion
Positive Reinforcement
Acquiring Assent
Least Restrictive Practice
Non contingent Compassion
No child should have to prove they are worthy of care
Positive reinforces should typically be contingent – what helps they calm down (emotional support thing)
Positive Reinforcement
Adding something to reinforce a behavior – important for compassionate care to promote goodness
Acquiring Assent
When you cannot give your own consent – Important for being respectful to the child
