Comp 2 Topic 6 - Geographical Investigations - Human Flashcards
What was the enquiry question?
How and why are there variations in quality of life for different areas within Bournemouth (Boscombe and queens park)
Name the locations that you visited?
Boscombe and queens park
Explain why you chose your enquiry question?
-They are only a mile apart but have very different standards of living and quality of life.

What was your method for measuring the environmental quality?
- Systematic sampling- measured on a main road in both areas and one N/S street and one E/W street
- we did 3 EQS in boscombe and queens park
- we measured 7 factors: noise, condition of buildings, noise, litter, vandalism, traffic, green space
- we measured using a bu-polar scale between -2 and +2 and had a description of what this would look like
- the best score for an area would be +14 the worst -14, we added up all the scores and found an eqs for both area
Write out your method to measure perception of environment in boscombe and queens park
- systematic sampling, before we went to each area we placed a dot in the middle of the map of QP and Bosc
- we then went to the street closest to this dot and took a picture
- we annotated the image with factors such as house type, house density, green space, traffic, proximity to services, air quality. As this showed an individual perception
Explain two positive features of each test
Measuring environmental quality
- We used systematic sampling so that we evaluated the same sort of road in each area.
- we measured a variety of different factors to get our average, it makes our test more conclusive
Perception of environmental quality
- we used systematic sampling so we got a random location in each area
- we measured a variety of different factors to get our average, it makes our test more conclusive
Explain a source of error in each test
EQS- the -2 to +2 was not the best measure for how good/bad the area was. Having a neutral score allowed us to sit on the fence and not really judge the area if it was good or bad . It is very opinionated.
Photo- is the photo representative of the area, we only took one photo which is representative of the whole area
How did you use sampling in each area?
EQS- systematic sampling was used to pick similar locations in both areas
Photo- systematic sampling was used to purposely pick 2 random locations
Explain how crime data supported your investigation?
In queens park there was only 72 crimes In a month compared to 522 in boscombe. It shows that people are much more more desperate in boscombe for money and more drugs and alcohol to cope.
What did we conclude?
Our EQS survey in QP was +1.5 compared to boscombes -0.15 showing a big gap in quality of life.
It scored a +2 for noise, building conditions, litter, greenery and safety much better than boscombe. Our pictures helped us see this with boscombe having damaged brickwork and windows, no front gardens , no space to park cars and house right on the roads all linking in for poor health for people due to air pollution and indicating low wealth due to lack of maintenance. In comparison queens park had large semi-detached houses with trees on the roadsides
