Phonological does not involve print. Phonics involves print and sound together.
What is the alphabetic principle?
The understanding that the sequence of letters in written words represents the sequence of sounds.
What is graphophonemicnknowledge?
The relationship of printed letters to spoken words.
In the alphabetic principle, how do students decide written language?
By using letter sound knowledge.

Oral background, prior reading experience, language background, what kind of text it is.

Grows aware of sound symbol relationship. Focused on printed symbols. Attempts to break the code of print. Uses decoding to figure out words
What is phonological and phonemic awareness?
The ability of the student to recognize sounds in spoken language, how they can be segmented (pulled apart), blended (put together) and manipulated.

End of grade 1 to end of grade 3
Developed fluency in reading. Recognizes patterns in words. Checks for meaning and sense. Knows a stock of sight words
