How is the tax rate figured?
Fixed by resolution of the Board of Commissioners, not to exceed the millage cap approved by referendum.
This is outlined in section 200.062 of Florida State Statutes

What happens after certification of property values?
-District holds a public hearing within 65-80 days of certification to adopt of tentative budget and millage rate
-Then advertises notice of the final public hearing within 15 days of tentative budget
-At final public hearing, final budget is adopted for implementation on October 1
How large is the Iona district?
42 square miles of land and over 20 miles of shoreline and canals
What are the district boundaries?
Western- Caloosahatchee
Southern - Pine Ridge Rd & San Carlos Blvd (turns into FM Beach FD)
Eastern - Heritage Farms Rd continuing on Summerlin Rd (turns into South Trail)
Northern - Davis Drive - just south of Midpoint Bridge (turns into City Dept)

FPL - serves the entire district with above and below ground utility lines. (substation located across from Station 73)
Lee County Utilities Water - county provides most water but it is not uncommon for a household to have septic
Also available to district in some homes/businesses - gas (liquid propane or natural)

What is the FPL substation also used for?
staging area for vehicles, machinery and materials for emergency needs

Describe the district’s growth in recent years
Mostly internal
Area stays relatively the same, but large tracts of land zoned for agricultural have changed to commercial or residential.

What is special about Bunche Beach
-it is a 719 acre tidal wetland
-natural area indicative of the entire area before exotic plant species
-it is considered “old florida”
-ranges from sandy beach to mangrove forest to salt flats

Punta Rassa
(originally named Punta Rasca meaning smooth or flat point)
Who renamed Punta Rassa?
Spanish Conquistadors in the mid-16th century who unloaded cattle in the area.

Describe Caloosahatchee geology
Tertiary-Quaternary sediments - consists of a quartz sand blanket covering limestone and clay.
Fossils are very common and usually in excellent condition
Where are Holocene sediments found?
Coastal areas
They were formed in the last 10,000 years with the warming of the earth. Generally occur near the coastline with elevations less than 5 ft
What was the Iona area once known as?
“gladiolus capital of the world”
Who was Iona named by?
By an early Scottish settler for the Ionian Islands of Scotland
It was considered the most consistently frost-free area in the US.

1935 - two bad winters in Central Florida forced growers here that year
