Why have attitudes towards women changed?

A
  1. During the first and Second World War women proved they could take on the work once before done by men and proved they could do them just as well.
  2. Countries such as New Zealand gave women equal rights opening the way for other countries.
  3. The work of the suffragettes showed that women didn’t just want to sit in the corner and wanted to be listened to.
  4. The UN declaration of human rights includes for all people no matter of their race or gender.

What are the effects of discrimination and racism?

  1. If certain groups feel as if they are being treated unfairly they may cut them of from society and even work against the society
  2. Can lead to the rise of extreme groups such as the BNP who encourage division between different ethnic groups
  3. They can turn to crime as they see no good future in a discriminating society
  4. Can lead to acts of violence such as riots and attacks to get back at the discriminator

What can be done to promote community cohesion by the government?

A

EDUCATION
Part of the national curriculum in 2006
Ofsted judge all schools on how hey include community cohesion in their lessons

FUNDING
Give financial support to groups and projects which promote community cohesion and equality

PEOPLE
Establish groups such as the equality and human rights commission to ensure that laws are acted upon.
Make sure that all groups in society are represented fairly in education, police and social services

LAWS
Make it illegal to discriminate against others to prevent hatred against race or religion

  1. Religious wedding services are difficult as each religion has its own style
  2. The religion in the children can cause conflict
  3. Some family members may feel they have betrayed their faith by marrying a person with an opposing view

Different Christian attitudes to equal right for women:

A

Traditional attitude of Protestant christianity= men and women have different roles and so therefore can not have equal rights in religion.

  • church tradition
  • Jesus only have women disciples
  • St.paul teaches in the New Testament that women should not teach or speak in the church

Catholic attitudes=men and women should have equal roles in life and society.

  • God created both men and women at the same time
  • only men disciples so only men priests
  • Jesus was a man so priests should be men as they represent him

Modern attitude of Protestant Christianity= men and women should have equal rights and they have women priests and ministers.

  • men and women were created at the same time one is not superior
  • sanctity of life-all life was created by God and it is holy so it doesn’t matter if there gender

Traditional attitude= men and women have different roles in life and religion and therefore have different rights.

What is conversion?

Why does it create issues?

A

The teaches of religions and the facts of a multi-faith society may conflict with each other. Many religions see it as their right to convert others to their religion

BECAUSE
- they believe their religion is the truth and all others are mistaken
- their holy book teaches them to convert others
They believe everyone should go to heaven and this can only be if they are converted

PROBLEMS
-Can lead to arguments and violence as all religions think they are correct
-impossible to say that all other religions are wrong unless you have studied them
Can be seen as prejudice and discrimination of someone in a different religion

Why is bringing up children in a multi-faith society an issue?

A

Gives children a more diverse range of choice on which religion to follow.
Children are required to earn of different religions as part of education.
Cause issues for many religious believers

BECAUSE

  • Most parents want their children to follow their religion
  • parents may be worried that they will not be reunited after death as they chose different beliefs
  • peer pressure can either put them off following a religion or go against family traditions
  • children educated in state schools experience the non-religious nature of British life and are tempted away from religion

  • many faith schools not educate about other religions
  • join together in special groups to explore ways of promoting community cohesion
  • work to find similarities in religions that can be celebrated
  • encouraging mixed-faith marriages to bring children up in both religions and then allowing them the choice when they are older
