How does a religious upbringing lead to a belief in God?

A
  • they follow what there parents tell them as they are role models

16
Q

How does numinous lead to a belief in God?

A
  • They FEEL the presence of God themselves and therefore he must be real
  • the only power we know that is bigger than us is God as he is omnipotent so it must be him
17
Q

How does conversion lead to a belief in God?

A

They believe that God is calling them to do something for him

18
Q

How does a miracle lead to a belief in God?

A

The only power that could cause this to happen is God as he is omnipotent and is the only explanation

19
Q

How do prayers lead to a belief in God?

A

If the prayer is answered they will feel as if they are being listened to by God

20
Q

How do unanswered prayers lead to agnosticism or atheism?

A
  • they do not feel the presence of God
  • if he is omniscient then he would know about all prayers
  • if God was benevolent the. He would be loving and answer us
  • if God is omnipotent then he would have the power to make our prayers come to true or show a sign to us
21
Q

What is the argument for design?

A

The idea that God designed the world in order for it to fit together so well

22
Q

What is the evidence for design in the world?

A
  • DNA is so complex it could not have been created by accident
  • the beauty of the scenery must have been painted by an artist which must have taken a long time
  • the laws of science such as gravity and motion etc. are all complex things working together
  • evolution could suggest design as it is a process through which complex life forms came from much simpler ones
23
Q

Why could the design argument lead to a belief in God?

A
  • anything which as been designed needs a designer
  • there is evidence that the world has been designed
  • the only possible designer of the world is God
  • therefore God must exist
24
Q

Why may the design argument not lead to a belief in God?

A
  • the designer may not be God
  • it ignores the lack of design in the universe eg. Volcanoes and diseases
  • the theory does not refer to the existence of dinosaurs
  • evidence for design can be explained by science
25
Q

What is the argument for causation?

A

Causation is the process whereby one thing causes another- cause and effect

26
Q

What is the evidence of causation in the world?

A

Everything we do in life has an effect eg. Pushing the brake in your car will cause you to stop

27
Q

Why may the causation argument lead to a belief in God?

A
  • anything that happens or exists has a cause
  • the cause has to be something else than the effect- nothing can cause its own existence as it would have to exist before its own existence which is nonsense
  • in a chain of cause and effect you must have a first cause
  • the only first cause if the universe is God
28
Q

Why may the causation argument not lead to a belief in God?

A
  • If everything needs a cause what caused God?
  • God may not have been the first cause
  • matter and energy do not end, therefore they do not need a beginning or a cause
29
Q

What is the Big Bang?

A

About 15 million years ago all the matter in the world compressed so much that it caused an explosion

Evidence is shown through red shift as it shows that the world is expanding as through from a central point

30
Q

What is evolution?

A

Adaptions, mutations and natural selection has lead to many different species to evolve from the early forms of life

Evidence includes fossils and shared DNA between life forms

31
Q

How may scientific explanations of the world lead to agnosticism or atheism?

A

They explain the formation of the world without referring to God

32
Q

How do Christians respond to scientific explanations of the world?

A
  • God must have caused the big band to happen in order to get it exactly correct
  • the apparent age theory could explain that the 6 days God created the universe could be a compressed time if the evolution and Big Bang process
  • God created in genesis in the same order as described in the theory of evolution
  • life on earth could not have happened by chance so God must have ensured that it happened
33
Q

How may evil and suffering lead to agnosticism or atheism?

A
  • if God was benevolent then how would not allow people to suffer
  • if God was omniscient then he would know of all of the evil and suffering and wouldn’t allow it
  • if God was omnipotent then he would have the power to stop all evil and suffering
  • if God was omnipresent then he would be all around us being able to the evil and suffering
34
Q

How do Christians respond to the problem of evil and suffering?

A
  • believe that God wants us to help those who suffer following Jesus’ example eg. Being a nurse and doctor
  • it is not ids fault but the misuse of humans free will
  • it is part of gods plan that can not be understood, putting us in presentation for heaven, facing evil and suffering improves people’s souls
  • part of gods plan and that it will lead to better things eg. Being reunited in heaven
35
Q

What is conversion?

A

An experience that makes you change your life and believe in God
