- Good for initial contact
- used for on call situations
What are some attributes of cell phones?
- Private
- limited range
- roaming issues
what are some attributes of sat phones?
- Works where cell coverage is not an option
- Expensive
- technology dependant
- limited application
What are some types of radios and their applications?
Portables -limited range -need batteries Mobiles -hard wired into vehicle -more wattage and larger antennae Base stations -dedicated power -Large mast -maximum wattage -require an active operator Avionics
What do you require to operate a radio?
What can happen if you don’t have it.
A federal license that dictates which frequencies the radio is licensed for?
There are penalties for non compliance
How do radios operate?
-if possible elaborate on which features make radios good for fires
- Line of sight transmission of same frequency (good for fires due to localized efforts)
- Can be repeated by stations that re-transmit the frequency to overcome obstacles.
- Repeater stations are usually at mountain tops but there are some portable repeaters.
What are radios that transmit on one frequency and receive on another?
Duplex frequencies

What are some important communication aspects of maps and plans?
- Great visual communication too
- Good for conveying information to large groups
- Can be selective
- Available for future reference
- Personal safety depends on good maps and plans
