Communication and Navigation Systems Flashcards
Name the basic components of a communication system.
Microphone, headset, loudspeaker, transmitter, receiver, transmitting antenna, and receiving antenna.
What is the most common communication system in use today?
VHF AM modulation system.
Which radio system is used for long range communications?
HF system.
What is a transceiver?
A self-contained unit that performs both transmission and reception using the same power supply, tuner, and antenna.
What are the components of a typical VOR system?
Receiver, indicator, dipole antenna and power supply.
What are the basic components of an autopilot system?
Gyros, servos and amplifier.
What are the sensing element of an autopilot system?
Gyros for direction, turn-and-bank, and attitude, and an altimeter.
What are the output elements of an autopilot system?
Servos for actuating control surfaces.
What is the purpose of a bonding jumper on a radio shock mount?
To provide a low impedance return to power source and minimize EMI from static electricity.
What is the transmitting frequency of an emergency locator transmitter (ELT)?
121.5 MHz.
How can you determine when the batteries of an ELT should be replaced, even though the set operates?
By checking the battery replacement date on the outside of the ELT. Time is computed from the date of manufacture of the battery.
Describe the proper method of routing coaxial cable from the antenna to the receiver.
Cable should be run by the shortest path possible, secured every two feet. Cables should not be routed with wire bundles and should not have bends of less than 10 times the diameter of the cable.
Where is the preferred location for mounting a VOR antenna on a small aircraft?
Preferred location is on top forward part of the cabin. For the dipole, it should be horizontal to the ground plane. Alternative is vertical stabilizer.
Where should DME antennas be placed?
DME antenna should be place on the underside of the fuselage and mounted such that they are not blocked or blanketed (not visible to the ground forward of the aircraft) when the aircraft is banked.
What are marker beacons?
Marker beacons are part of the ILS and are located at predetermined distances on the centerline of the runway.
