Aircraft Covering Flashcards
What determines the required quality and strength of fabric that is to be used for covering aircraft?
Pounds per square foot loading (PSF) and never-exceed airspeed (VNE) of the aircraft.
When are the anti-tear strips recommended and where are they used?
Recommended for VNE of 250 mph, installed over the ribs under the reinforcing tape, top and bottom surfaces.
What is the maximum permissible deterioration of aircraft fabric before is is considered un-airworthy?
More than 30% from its original required tensile strength.
What should be the strength of the fabric used for recovering an aircraft?
All materials used to recover the aircraft must be at least of equal quality or greater strength as those originally used by the manufacturer.
What is the purpose and location of drain grommets in aircraft fabric?
Drain grommets allow condensed moisture to leave the aircraft and provide ventilation. Located on the underside of airfoils at the trailing edge as close to the rib as possible, and lowest point along center of fuselage.
How are drain grommets installed in aircraft fabric?
Brass grommets doped first to fabric patches, plastic to covering directly. Doped again, then openings cut in center of the grommet.
What is the purpose of reinforcing tape?
Reinforcing tape is used over ribs to prevent stitching from cutting through the fabric covering.
What type of fabric is not affected by moisture of mildew?
Fiberglass fabric is not affected by mildew, moisture, chemicals and most acids.
What methods are used to check the strength of doped fabric?
A fabric punch test, but more accurately if marginal, using a laboratory test.
What type of machine-sewed seams are used in aircraft covering?
Plain overlap seams, folded-fell and French-fell seams.
What should be done to protect a structure that will come in contact with doped fabric?
Use a protective coating such as aluminum foil, dope-proof paint, or cellulose tape.
If the original rib stitch spacing cannot be determined when re-covering an aircraft, what is your reference?
AC 43.13-1B
What is the standard tie-off not used for rib stitching?
A modified Seine knot except for the starting stitch.
What do you call the edge of cloth, tape, or webbing that has been woven to prevent raveling?
Selvage edge.
Name two organic and two synthetic fibers.
Cotton, linen, and fiberglass, nylon, Orlon, Dacron.
