Aircraft Fuel Systems Flashcards
What is the purpose of a fuel dump system?
The fuel dump system is available for the dumping of fuel in order to meet maximum landing weight in the event of an emergency landing shortly after takeoff.
Other than reducing weight, what other function can be accomplished with a fuel jettison system?
Fuel may be dump from the heavy wing to maintain lateral stability. Required of all transport aircraft if max takeoff weight is more than 105% of maximum landing weight.
What are a few types of fuel cells?
Bladders, integral, welded or riveted
How is the weight of a bladder-type cell supported?
Bladders are supported by the cavity in which is sits and maintains the shape of the cell.
What is a “wet wing” construction?
Wet well construction is a wing containing a integral tank, using the skin to contain the fuel.
What are the advantage of a single point pressure fueling system?
Greatly reduces time to service, eliminates skin damage from fueling hoses, hose nozzles, and reduces the chances of fuel contamination.
What is the purpose of warning lights in connection with fuel systems?
Warning lights are used to indicate low fuel pressure and low fuel quantity.
Where is electrical operated valve-in-transit indicator light used?
Valve-in-transit indicator lights are used on large multi-engine aircraft on fuel crossfeed and line valves to indicate movement of fuel. On when moving.
What is the purpose of a fuel temperature indicator on a turbine engine?
To give an indication of fuel temperature and possible formation of ice crystals.
What are the four general types of fuel quantity gauges?
Sight glass (visible), mechanical (linkage), electrical (transmitter, receiver) or electronic (totalizer).
Which type of fuel quantity gauge is considered to be more accurate than other types?
Electronic using capacitive sensors, because it measures by weight.
What is a drip gauge?
A drip gauge in an under-the-wing bayonet-mounted fuel gauge that is drawn down from the lower wing surface until fuel drips in a hollow drip tube, indicating the level of the fuel.
What is a crossfeed system?
A crossfeed system is a system of interconnected fuel hoses and valves designed to give the aircraft the ability to fuel any engine from any tank.
What is the purpose of the baffles in a fuel tank?
Baffles are used to reduce surges (sloshing) of fuel during attitude changes.
How can a fuel tank be checked for leaks after a repair?
By filling with air not over one-half psi and checking for leaks using a bubble solution or liquid soap.
