Why is healthy communication skills important for couple wellness?
Communication is the foundation of a relationship and couples rely on healthy communication skills to productively work through both celebrations and struggles in the relationship.
What are the TWO skills that will help shape a positive environment for communication in your relationship?
(1) Assertiveness
(2) Active listening
What is assertiveness?
Assertiveness is expressing your feelings and asking for what you want in the relationship.
How can you be assertive?
Take responsibility for your thoughts and feelings by using “I” statements instead of starting with “You”.
What is active listening?
Active listening is listening attentively WITHOUT interrupting and restating what was heard.
How can you engage in active listening?
(1) Let your partner know if his/her message was accurately received.
(2) Acknowledge the content and the feelings of your partner.
How do you focus on the good when communicating with your partner?
Try to avoid the THREE pitfalls:
(1) Blame
(2) Criticism
(3) Judgement.
Instead, focus on the good by giving him/her compliments and showing appreciation daily.
Relationship health is vital to couple wellness. Name THREE qualities of a healthy communication.

What are TWO tips in planning a specific time to check in with your partner about your relationship and life together?
(1) Use the time to communicate about aspects of my relationship that I overlook or take for granted.
(2) Try to check in daily for a period of time and see the impact it has on overall communication.
