- message - purpose to be conveyed

- decoding - translation/interpretation of message

- feedback - to see how successful the message transfer was

Barriers to Communication
1. filtering - manipulation to make message favourable
2. selective perception - selectively see/hear based on needs, motivation, experience, personal characteristics, etc.
3. information overload - amount of info > processing capacity = lost info
4. emotions - receiver’s feelings
5. language - words have different meanings to different people (age, education, cultural background, jargon, slang, specific terms)
6. gender - different communication styles
7. national culture - different languages, culture, values, norms & communication styles
