Communicable Diseases Flashcards
Bacterial diseases
• samonella
• ecoli
• Lyme disease
• gonorrhea
Viral diseases
• ring worm
• flu
• covid
• chicken pox
• measles
• mumps
• rubella
• tobacco mosaic virus
Fungal diseases
• athletes foot
• fungal nail
• rose black spot
Protist
• malaria
Ways to control vectors
• hygiene - disinfectants, effective but can’t kill all
• isolating victims - reduces transmissions but they require care
• destroying vectors - reduce rate of transmissions, kills ecosystems
• vaccination
Virus characteristics
• smaller than bacteria (20-40nm)
• none are beneficial
• not living
• only divide when in your cells - destroy body cells
Bacteria characteristics
• 1000nm
• some are beneficial
• organisms
• divide by splitting in two (binary fission)
Symptoms of malaria
• head ache
• fever
• chills and sweating
• fatigue
• vomiting
Cholera
• vomiting
• water loss
• sunken eyes
• cramps
Diphtheria
• yellow tongue
• thick grey/white coating
• fever
Tobacco mosaic virus
• light green colouration in veins of plant
• affects yield of crops
• changes DNA so can’t make food
• pattern prevents photosynthesis
• must burn plants
• or buy resistant strains
Non specific response
• white blood cell engulfs pathogen
• destroys by releasing anti-toxins
Anti body response
• antigen of pathogen binds to receptor
• WBC produces specific antibodies
• neutralise/destroy
Anti-toxin response
• WBC release anti-toxins to combat toxins release from pathogens
Human defence responses
• formation of scabs
• eyes - tears kill microbes
• stomach
• outer layer of skin
• oil glands - kill microbes
• lungs - mucus traps microbes
