Animal And Plant Cells Flashcards
Size of animal cells
• Around 10-30 um long
Sub cellular structures in an animal cell
• Nucleus - controls activities of cell and contains genetic information. Surrounded by nuclear membrane. Diameter of 10 um
• Cytoplasm - gel-like substance where most of the chemical reactions happen. Contains enzymes.
• Cell membrane - holds the cell together and controls what goes in and out
• Mitochondria - where most of the reactions for aerobic respiration take place.
• Ribosomes - where proteins are made in the cell
How big are plant cells?
• often bigger than animal cells - between 10-100 um long
Sub-cellular structures of a plant cell
• Nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, mitochondria, ribosomes
• rigid cell wall - made of cellulose, supports and strengthens cell
• permanent vacuole - contains cell sap to keep cell rigid/support the plant
• chloroplasts - where photosynthesis occurs, contain a green substance called chlorophyll which absorbs light needed for photosynthesis
What plant cells don’t contain chloroplasts?
• Root cells - underground so don’t photosynthesise
•Potato/onion cells
A cell that has half the number of usual chromosomes is called what?
Haploid
Where do the majority of metabolic reactions take place?
Cytoplasm
What type of cell is a sperm cell?
A eukaryote
