16
Q

What is meant by a cohort being identified in disease investigation?

A

A group of people with commanality e.g. share the same block corridor, sports team, social nights etc.

17
Q

What can be a useful tool to brief non medical personnel?

A

Graphics representation (epi-curve)?

18
Q

Why types of epidemic curves are there in graphical representation

A

Point source
Continuous source
Propagated source
Intermittent source

19
Q

What is a point source epidemic curve?

A

Persons are exposed to the same common source over a brief period of time, such as through a single meal or event attended by all cases.

Graph shows rapid rise and gradually falls off over 1 incubation period

20
Q

What is a continuous source in an epidemic curve?

A

Exposure is not confined to one point in time. Cases are spread over a long period of time with multiple incubation periods.

21
Q

What is a propagated source in an epidemic curve?

A

No common source but spread from person to person. Can have irregular peaks

22
Q

What is an intermittent source in an epidemic curve?

A

Similar to continuous but exposure is intermittent with multiple peaks. Reflects intermittent times of exposure e.g. contaminated food products sold over longer period of time

23
Q

If food hygiene is a suspected source what actions should be taken?

A

Collection of menu cards
Interview catering staff
Preserve food samples
Audit records and check food safety policies
Check policies
Audit/inspect kitchen

24
Q

What should you do to complete your investigation?

A

Write a report to single service CDC focal point

Identify what happened

Identify what went wrong

Make recommendations to prevent recurrence or further spread
