what is diabetes mellitus
a disease where there is too much sugar in the blood
what is type 2 diabetes mellitus
the pancreas either doesn’t produce enough insulin or the body has become resistant to insulin
what is type 1 diabetes mellitus
the pancreas produces little or no insulin
what is coronary artery disease
damages, blockages, or disease in the blood vessels
what is myocardial infarction
a heart attack- when something restricts or blocks blood flow to the heart
what is congestive heart failure
a condition where the heart doesn’t pump blood as well as it should
what is atrial fibrilation
an irregular often rapid heart rate that commonly causes poor blood flow, the atria beat out of coordination with the vetnricles
what is asthma
a condition In which a persons airways become inflamed, narrow, and swell and produce extra mucus making it hard to breathe
what is chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
a group of lung diseases that block airflow and make it difficult to breath. the most common are chronic bronchitis and emphysema
what is chronic bronchitis
airflow is blocked by increased mucus and inflammation
what is emphysema
destruction and enlargement of air spaces
what is bronchitis
inflammation of the lining of bronchial tubes which carry air to and from the lungs
what is obstructive sleep apnea
sleep disorder in which breathing stops and starts, treatment is a CPAP machine
what is pulmonary embolism
blood clot in the lung
what is deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
a blood clot in a deep vein usually in the legs
what is a pneumonia
infection that inflames air sacs in one or both lungs
what is gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
stomach acid or bile comes back up into the esophagus and irritates the lining
what is peptic ulcer disease
a sore that develops on the lining of the esophagus, stomach, or small intestine
what is cirrhosis
liver damage from alcohol abuse or hepatitis
what is clostridium difficile
inflammation of the colon caused by bacteria, highly contagious and causes severe diarrhea and dehydration
what is hepatitis A
infectious disease of the liver caused by hepatitis A virus
what is hepatitis B
liver infection caused by hepatitis B virus
