Common diseases and disorder in animals Flashcards
What is a notifiable disease
it is a disease which has a legal requirement to be reported to the Animal Plant Health Agency (APHA).
Give an example of a notifiable disease
- rabies
- foot and mouth
- TB - tuberculosis
- Avian flu
- Bluetongue
- BSE. (Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy) (mad cow disease)
- Swine flu
What is rabies
its a virus attack the nervous system which spreads through bites through infected animals
What is Avian flu
also known as bird flu, this virus is transmitted by direct contact between birds or through bodily fluids and faeces.
What is swine flu
A virus that spreads between pigs through direct contact and airborne transmission. Much like human flu
What is BSE
it is also known as mad cow disease it is a very serious disease which affects the central nervous system of cattle sand is due to problems with a specific protein
What is TB
it is a bacterial disease that normally produces nodules in the lungs of mammals and birds. Transmission is airborne, due to coughing or sneezing if it untreated it can lead to death
What is Bluetongue
it is a viral disease, transmitted through midge bites that is most common in sheep
What is foot and mouth disease
it is an infectious viral disease affecting cattle, sheep, goats, pigs and other cloven hoofed animals. The virus is spread by direct contact though airborne transmission or by fomites. The disease is rarely fatal
Symptoms of rabies
foaming at the mouth, behavioural change. aggression
What is Newcastle disease
it is an infectious viral disease affecting birds, spread through direct contact with infected birds and their bodily fluids and also through fomites.
Symptoms of avian flu
swollen head, breathing problems, coughing, stressing, fewer laid eggs
Symptoms of Swine flu
breathing difficulties, coughing, sneezing and reduced appetite
Symptoms of BSE
loss of muscle control, problems with balance and coordination, mood or behavioural changes
Symptoms of TB
take time to develop but include loss of appetite, fever, coughing, diarrhoea and prominent lymph nodes
Symptoms of Bluetongue
fever, swollen face, nasal discharge and salivations
Symptoms of foot and mouth
fever, blisters int he mouth, excessive salivation and drooling blistering on the feet
Symptoms of Newcastle disease
Breathing difficulties, coughing, depressed appearance, twisted head and neck and reduced egg production
What is a zoonotic disease
a zoonotic disease is an infectious disease that can be passed on to humans
What special measures must be in place
handlers must wear appropriate PPE
Infecton control practices must be in place to prevent the spread of disease (known as barrier nursing )
Isolating rooms for infected animals
Examples of zoonotic diseases
- Ringworm
- Salmonella
- Campylobacter
- Cat Scratch Fever
- Leptospirosis
- Lyme Diseases
- Psittacosis
- Cheyletiella
- Sarcastic mange
- Toxoplasmosis
What is Ringworm
Ringworm is not a worm it’s a fungus which lives on top layer of the skin and hair follicles, and is spread through direct contact. It is not life - threatening
What is Salmonella
it is a bacterial infection of the intestine that many animals carry without becoming ill. The bacteria can be passed on to unborn animals from their mother, or by direct contact. The bacteria are present in faces and can then contaminate
What is Campylobacter
A bacterial infection that lives in the gut.
