Term used to describe a milf, self-limiting viral upper resp tract infection

Children
Presentation - 6
Nasal stuffiness
nasal discharge
sneezing
sore throat
cough
general malaise
Causative organism
Rhinovirus is most common cause.
Mechanism of transmission (2)
direct contatc or through aerosols
Investigations and diagnosis
Diagnosis is made based on clinical examination and history
Management - 2
- if pt has co-morbiditiy putting them at more risk, arrange a follow up
- Supportive treatment, rest, fluids, paracetamol and reassure that it is self-limiting.
Complications - 3
Sinusitis
Lower resp tract infections e.g. acute bronchitis, asthma exacerbation, COPD
Otitis media
Differentials - 6
Meningitis - stiff neck, photophobia, rash
Upper airway obstruction
Nasal foreign body
COVID-19
Flu
Strep pharyngitis
