Combustion Flashcards
What is a combustion reaction?
Burning is also called a combustion reaction. A combustion reaction is a reaction where a substance reacts with oxygen and heat (energy) is released.
Are combustion reactions exothermic or endothermic?
Therefore, combustion reactions are exothermic reactions.
Equation for combustion reactions
fuel + oxygen → other products + energy
What are some combustion reactions?
Burning wood A lit match Burning coal Burning gas Fireworks
What is incomplete combustion?
Combustion releases the most energy when there is plenty of oxygen. Incomplete combustion occurs when the supply of oxygen is poor.
What is produced?
In this type of combustion, water is still produced, however, carbon monoxide and carbon are produced instead of carbon dioxide. The carbon is released as soot.
Example: incomplete combustion of coal
Equation of incomplete combustion
carbon + oxygen → carbon monoxide + energy
What are some examples of incomplete combustion?
Gas appliances, heaters or fireplaces that are not properly designed, adjusted or maintained
Cars that have not been serviced for a long period of time
Inefficient burning of fossil fuels
Carbon Monoxide warning?
A byproduct of incomplete combustion is carbon monoxide.
Carbon monoxide is a colourless, odourless and tasteless gas that is extremely toxic.
What are some symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning?
Dizziness Nausea Shortness of breath Confusion May ultimately lead to death
