A

Jamestown

A

About 100 settlers arrived in Jamestown on May 24, 1607. It started off very weak and many were dying, but John Smith helped the survival of the colony and it later prospered with the sale of tobacco.

First Anglo-Powhatan War

A

Lord De La Warr’s troops raided Indian villages, burned houses, confiscated provisions and torched cornfields. The Indians and settlers created a peace treaty in 1614 and it was sealed through the marriage of John Rolfe and Pocahontas.

Second Anglo-Powhatan War

A

In 1644, the Indians made one last effort to remove Virginians from their land. They were defeated and created a peace treaty in 1646. It destroyed any hope of peacefully coexisting with the Natives because it banished the Chesapeake Indians from their lands and separated them from the white areas.

Act of Toleration

A

Catholics in Maryland were afraid that they were being out-populated in their own colony. They created the Act of Toleration to guarantee toleration of all Christians. It was passed in 1649 by the local representative assembly. It said that those who denied the existence of Jesus would be executed which was seen as less tolerant than before.

The five nations of the Iroquois tribe joined together in the Iroquois Confederacy. They wanted to end violent warfare among themselves and defeat enemies.

A
