Who was Mark?

Q

What does Mark teach us?

A

Even the disciples of Jesus didn’t understand Jesus and found it very hard to follow Jesus. Humans make a lot of mistakes and are far away from God. But Jesus died for our sins so we can come to the Father.

Jesus messianic vocation and inauguration of the kingdom were focused on his suffering and crucifixion.

Jesus as the true son of God and Jesus as suitable emperor in opposition to Rome’s candidates

Q

What was the discussion between Crossan and Goodacre about?

A

Crossan claims that the prophesies are historicized in Jesus’ life. But Mark uses too many details and obscure prophesies, that Goodacre claims that History is scriptualized.

Q

How does Mark write about Jesus as the messiah?

A

Mark said a lot about Jesus as Messiah, but showed less. Many times Mark shows that Jesus didn’t want to reveal his identity for avoiding masses, demons and opposition of the Roman leaders. He identified himself as ‘Son of Men’ (Daniel 7:13) a number of times to keep a low profile (93x in Ezekiel) In Aramaic, it can be an expression to refer to oneʼs self (sim to “A guyʼs gotta eat”)

Q

What’s Mark’s genre

A

Mark has got many features from a Greek tragedy, but then with a long introduction. He didn’t write a lot about Jesus’ life after the resurrection. At the same time it is a sort of a biography

Q

How does Mark write about a hero, who died such a painful death?

A

Mark uses a lot of irony (cf. 8:31; 9:31; 10:33–34)

esp. 15:16–20 - In mocking him, the soldiers are, in fact, coronating him
