college 11-12-13-14: Acts Flashcards
In which ways does the book of Acts follow up the gospel of Luke?
biographically (Jesus tells about his life and death and ascends to his Father) and theologically (Jesus not only there for the Jews, but also for the Gentiles)
Why are Acts ad Luke loosely connected according to Rowe and Parsons?
Acts hangs more with the epistles and Luke hangs more with the person of Jesus. John stands between these books
Why is there a need for a sequel of Luke’s gospel?
There is a need for a history about the chirstianizing of the Gentiles and there are some questions unanswered, like how do Christians live as Jesusʼs return is delayed?
What did Luke wanted to accomplish by writing Acts?
By portraying Christians as Roman citizens, Luke asks for empathy with the persecution of Christians. (Maybe Acts written for the purpose of defending Paul in Roman trial?) Furthermore Luke gives answers to how gentiles can share in the Salvation and how Jesus can be still the messiah, when his own people don’t even recognize him as one.
How is Acts structured?
Acts can be structured geographically: Jerusalem (1-7) Judea, Samaria and Galilee (8-12) Ends of the world (13-28). Acts can also be divided in a Jewish part and a Gentile part with the Jerusalem council (15) in the middle.
What is the main difference between Samaritans and Jews?
Samaritans didn’t acknowledge Jerusalem and Sion as the sacred place like the Jews did, but acknowledged the mountain Gerizim as the holy place to meet YHWH.
What can we learn from Paul’s conversation with the Greek philosophers? (17:16-34)
There is need for sensitvity and truth when proclaiming the gospel in a certain context
What do we learn from the start of Paul’s second missionary? (16:6-10)
There is trial and error in following God’s ways! The holy spirit will lead you like He has led Paul.
