Collars / Lapels Flashcards
Bertha
a collar or trimming, as of lace, worn about the shoulders by women, as over a low-necked waist or dress.
Pilgrim
A pilgrim collar is a wide rounded collar that extends to the shoulders with pointed ends at center front.
Band
a stand-up close-fitting buttoned collar
Mandarin
a small, close-fitting, stand up collar. It is usually about 3-4cm high, with edges that don’t quite meet at the front. As its name suggests, the Mandarin Collar comes from the traditional dress worn by the Mandarins in Imperial China.
Convertible
a rolled collar that converts two ways, meeting at center front or open, creating a notch collar effect
Spread
wider collar points that are angled outwards instead of pointing down.
Wing
a high stiff shirt collar with turned-down corners.
Sailor
a collar cut deep and square at the back, tapering to a V-neck at the front.
Peter Pan
a flat collar with rounded ends that meet at the front.
Shawl
a turned-over collar of a garment that combines with lapels forming an unbroken curving line.
Notched Lapel
when the lapel is sewn onto the collar of a jacket at an angle, creating a triangle between the two.
Peaked lapel
the tip of the lapel points upwards, standing proud from the collar. It is considered more formal and is perhaps most commonly found on double-breasted and dinner jackets. The formality may come from the fact that being able to cut a peak lapel is also considered one of the hardest tasks in tailoring.
lapel
the part on each side of a coat or jacket immediately below the collar which is folded back on either side of the front opening.
